Skål International through the decades - Celebrating 90 years
Antonio García del Valle
Skål International Honorary President
Reflecting on 63 years of Skål International membership, a friend posed a question that prompted a journey through our association's evolution. Skål International's origins trace back to the dawn of aviation when airlines and travel agencies laid their foundation.
Captain Carl Flormann's initiative in Sweden led to the birth of Skål International, initially embracing air, sea, and land transport companies alongside travel agencies.
Over time, Skål International expanded its membership to include hoteliers and diversified to cover various facets of the tourism industry, from airports to golf courses and beyond. The 1990 By-Laws extended the possibility, welcoming professionals dedicated to sales and promotion within the travel and tourism sector.
However, the landscape of our industry has shifted dramatically. The appeal of prestigious Skål International congresses, once a highlight for aspiring professionals, has faded. Gone are the days of week-long gatherings in exotic locations, subsidized flights, and inclusive packages at modest prices. The blunt contrast between past congresses, with their lavish arrangements and generous sponsorships, and the present reality underlines the drastic changes in our organization.
From the vibrant international gatherings of the past, where friendship thrived and partnerships grew, we now find ourselves in a landscape where airlines and tourism giants have departed, leaving behind a declining unit of seasoned members. With over a 50% decline in clubs and members, it's evident that Skål International faces challenges in adapting to contemporary realities.
As we mark our 90th anniversary, it's vital to contemplate avenues for revitalization and growth within Skål International. The legacy of our association, rooted in fostering connections and advancing the tourism industry, must endure and evolve to meet the demands of the times.
Cheers to 90 years of Skål International, and may this milestone serve as a catalyst for a renewed vision and rejuvenation.
